School always means the same nightmare for most parents: preparing the baon of their children.
Not all parents have the talent, or the seemingly required knowledge with regards to knowing what’s the best food for their growing kids. A little guidance, and experimentation might help though, combined with some innovative ideas on how to make foods healthier and more enticing.
The following are some measures, which could be of help in getting a step closer to being the ultimate gourmet mom or dad.
* Choose whole wheat bread. Most bread contain only about 60% wheat, since the 40% was already stripped away when bleached with white flour. As a result, most bread contain only half the nutrients you could ever get from wheat because the bran and the germ of the wheat grain which contain Vitamins B1, B2, B3, E, Folic Acid, Calcium, Zinc, and many others have already been removed.
* Moderate the use of catsup and mayonnaise in your sandwiches. Train your kids to follow this moderate serving of both catsup and mayonnaise to reduce the fat content from the mayonnaise, which are basically egg whites, and the food coloring from the catsup, which may be harmful to health in large amounts.
* Grill or roast meat, instead of frying. This is in order to lessen the fat content in meat by letting the fat and oil drip through the grilling, or roasting process. Teach your kids to enjoy foods with lesser cholesterol. The trick is in the marinade. Make the marinade as tasty but as healthy ass could be. Avoid too much salt and sugar and refrain from artificial food coloring.
* Make healthy shakes. Play around with fruits. Minimize the use of milk. The more potent the fruit, the better. This way, your kids will not go looking for soft drinks or ice cream.
* Give your kids sliced varieties of fruits instead of chocolates or candies for dessert. Mix and match.
* If you are going to give them rice for lunch, do not give them more than they should eat. If you already know that your kid is high on rice, lessen the serving.
* If you are going to cook pasta, use sun-dried or fresh tomatoes, pesto, fresh herbs and spices, tuna, olives, and olive oil instead of having creamy sauce such as with Fettuccine Alfredo and Carbonara. This is to minimize the fat and calorie content that is already present in your pasta.
* Instead of French Fries, give your kids potato salad, or baked potato as these are healthier compared to the deep-fried French Fries.
The reason why you need to consider these healthier alternatives is for your child to refrain from junk and street foods, which can be unhealthy and unsanitary, and later on pose a threat to your child’s health. Also, personalizing these food servings also create a stronger bond within parent and child. So go get busy in the kitchen, and prepare that baon mom and dad!
